July’s Reigning Rubies!

It's July and while others are thinking about fireworks, I’m thinking about Rubies! Rubies are July’s birthstone, representing love, health and wisdom.

Celebrating in Style

To celebrate this month in style, I’d like to present some stunning RUBY pieces from our collection. It’s well known that jewelry featuring a Ruby signifies passion and love between two people, making it an ideal choice for an engagement gift. Ruby is also traditionally given on the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries. But if you ask me, I think it’s a beautiful choice for any occasion you wish to surprise your loved one with a little extra romance.

First, we have the Tulip Ruby Gold Brooch (P4880) which displays two clusters of vibrant Rubies, slightly pink in their hue, held within tulip flowers set in 14 karat gold. This piece dates back to the 1960s and will surely be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Next, we have a gorgeous pair of Ruby Diamond Platinum Stud Earrings (E2402) with two oval faceted red Rubies, slightly purple in color, surrounded by two rows of glistening diamonds. This piece was created a little more recently in the 1990s.

Last but not least is our Estate Ruby Diamond White Gold Cocktail Ring (A7134) with three oval faceted red Rubies. Their luxurious color, almost purple in their depth, are surrounded by diamonds set in 18 karat white gold. This ring is a mid-century style from the 1950s.

Rare, Red, and Beautiful

According to the Gemological Institute of America, Ruby is one of the most coveted gems because it’s the most valuable. Its value increases based on color, quality, and price-per-carat.

Although most people think diamonds are the most valuable precious stones, they’re actually not that hard to find, unlike Rubies. High-quality Rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are much rarer to find in nature than diamonds, so when you find a beautiful true Ruby piece, it can truly be treasured for generations.

Rubies are a variety of the mineral corundum and get their color from trace amounts of chromium. The more chromium, the stronger the red color.

While corundum is a fairly common mineral, the red variety of corundum, or Rubies, are rarer than blue gems, like sapphires. The rarity combined with the demand for rich red gems keeps the price very high.

Where They’re Mined

Rubies have consistently been found in Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, India, Japan, Thailand, and even Scotland. After WWII, Ruby deposits were also found in Madagascar, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Vietnam. As they can be found all over the world, there is no shortage of small gems; like the kind used in cluster rings. They can be expensive, but are readily available. Gems of a carat or more really drive prices up. Good quality Rubies in this size are extremely scarce, and a full carat Ruby can cost thousands of dollars.

The Restorative Powers of A Ruby

Rubies are said to have many positive effects and magical properties such as restoring vital life forces and even youth and vitality when rubbed on the skin. They are believed to detoxify the body and blood and treat fevers and diseases.

Rubies are thought to energize and balance the heart chakra. They improve motivation and goal-setting, create positive dreams, and bring about passion, attraction, and enthusiasm. They are known as the stone of courage and it’s believed that wearing a fine red Ruby is good luck. Many legends say a person possessing a Ruby can ward off negativity and evil.

If you’re hoping to bring luck in your life, or luck in love, a Ruby is sure to bring romance.
