Victorian coral seed pearl gold and Stanhope* lens cross pendant circa 1890.

*Stanhope scopes are optical devices that enable the viewing of microphotographs without using a microscope. They were invented by René Dagron in 1857. This cross pendant has a microscopic image of a Madonna viewable through the central Stanhope lens.

GEMSTONES: coral, seed pearls.

METAL: 14-karat yellow gold.

MEASUREMENTS: approximately 1 5/8” (4.1 cm), including bail, by 7/8” (2.2 cm) overall.

CONDITION: high magnification photographs show very pristine condition consistent with age and wear.
