1880's George C Shreve & Co Articulated Brooch/Pendant

Objects such as this jewel are imbued with a romance that few other possessions can match.  Being in their presence is always a pleasure.  Collectors know the feeling and this exceptional brooch has the magic.  Signed Geo C. Shreve & Co., the famed San Francisco, California jeweler,  a name that by the 1880's was considered among the finest precious metal-smiths in the United States.  In typical Victorian, avant-garde styling, the articulated, multiform design incorporates an obsessive display and utilization of gold granulation motifs and techniques that very successfully capture the eye and the imagination.  It has no beginning.  It has no end!   Examine its wondrous complexities... like the integral parts of a kaleidoscope laid out for us to discover its secrets,  but not really.  It is a a kaleidoscope... like a riot of harmony, if there be such a thing. Meticulously handcrafted in 14-karat gold, the back fitted with an inventive, hinged enhancer to facilitate wearing it as a pendant.  Antique early 1800's articulated gold brooch by San Francisco's famed Shreve & Co.
